How Reducing Sugar Intake Can Heal Your Body
Something that I know all too well is that sugar addiction is real. Although many of us exhibit the signs and symptoms of sugar addiction, you may not even realize that this is something that you’re suffering from. It wasn’t until I consciously decided that I was going to strictly limit the amount of added sugars that I allowed in my way of eating (NOT diet), that I realized just how much sugar I was previously consuming on a daily basis. It was a frightening realization to say the least. When we think of excess sugar, it’s common to immediately imagine the usual suspects: soft drinks, candy, desserts, etc. We should also consider the hidden sugars in foods that we may not necessarily think of as “bad,” such as breads, cereal, potatoes, corn-based products, and other foods that spike sugar and digest as sugar after eaten.
If you’ve been visiting my site, then hopefully by now you know that removing excess sugar does not have to mean giving up your favorite foods. Additionally, you may find that adopting a cleaner way of eating that excludes processed foods and starches will begin to aid in the healing of certain ailments that you commonly experience.
I’m an over-thinker, so when I decided to begin my lifestyle change I did a LOT of research. It needed to be logical to my over-analytical mind. I imagine that this is the case for many people, especially when trying to encourage them to do something as drastic as completely changing the foods they consume. I’m going to try my best to explain in the simplest terms why removing excess sugar from your way of eating may prove to be extremely beneficial to your body, and begin your healing journey.
1. You consume simple carbohydrates such as a slice of white bread, a cupcake, or even a bottle of soda. As a result, the glucose (sugar) levels rise in your body.
2. In response, your pancreas secretes insulin. Insulin’s job is to process glucose, and deliver it to your cells for energy. While there are increased levels of glucose and insulin in your body, you will not burn fat. This is because glucose is readily available and very easy for the body to use for energy, so it has no need to tap into your fat stores for energy.
3. If you consistently eat a diet high in sugar, your cells will eventually become overloaded from the insulin spikes, and begin to reject it, leaving high levels of insulin and glucose in your blood that is unable to be used for energy. You will notice that after meals that are high in carbohydrates, you may feel a brief period of increased energy that is quickly followed by a “crash” leaving you sleepy, fatigued, craving more carbs, and hungry again very quickly. We sometimes affectionately call this “the itis.”
4. These highs and lows place major stress on your organs and force them to work harder to carry out every-day processes.
This is of course an overly-simplified account of how excess sugar consumption can negatively impact your health. If continued over a long period of time, this can lead to diabetes, hormonal imbalance, mental fog, insulin resistance, mood disorders, and obesity. If your body type is “apple” meaning you carry your excess weight in midsection/abdomen, you may be at increased risk for insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes and should consider embarking a lower-carb lifestyle. There is a wealth of information available to help you reverse the effects of these ailments. I shared this to serve as an introduction to how sugar impacts your health.
