Peace, family.
Let’s face it, your holiday party needs a star. I’m not talking about your uncle, who after a few shots of brown liquor starts re-living dance crazes from the days of yore. I’m also not referring to your super woke cousin who sets grandpa off by bringing up the fact that his preferred political candidate is extremely problematic. Nope, what your party needs is this Antipasto/Charcuterie Holiday Wreath.
Hopefully if you’re reading this in 2020, then your party is small, outdoors, and guests are at least six feet apart. But, just because the social scene looks a little (okay, a lot) different this year doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a showstopper, and that’s exactly what this antipasto/charcuterie wreath is. It’s gorgeous, tasty, and a conversation starter. It also happens to be low-carb and keto-friendly. Keep reading to see how easy it is to create!
What Tools Do I Need to Make a Charcuterie Wreath?
- Round Surface – Any large, round plate or cutting board will do. You can even lay this directly on parchment paper if you don’t have a round surface available.
- Parchment Paper – This antipasto wreath can get a little, ahem, juicy. I like to cover whatever surface I’m working on with white parchment paper, so there’s less to do when it comes time for cleanup.
- Appetizer or Cocktail Picks– These will hold your ingredients together and allow your wreath to come together easily. I’ve seen some “freehand” “loose leaf” antipasto wreaths, but honestly, using cocktail picks seems like the much more sanitary option. The last thing I want to see at a gathering is a pair of grubby paws touching all over the cheese cubes. Placing the ingredients on picks helps ensure that guests take/touch only what they plan to eat personally.
What Ingredients Do I Need?
The great thing about this wreath is that it is extremely customizable. Here are a few of the ingredients I used and recommend.
- Fresh Herbs – the herbs are very important and central to creating the base of the wreath. Two herbs I recommend are rosemary sprigs and basil. Rosemary is so beautiful, fragrant and delicious. It creates a stunning base for your wreath. I use the basil at the end to fill in spaces and make the wreath more full in appearance. I also feel that the taste of basil compliments the other ingredients in the platter.
- Cherry Tomatoes – I like for each cocktail pick to have at least one cherry tomato and mozzarella for even distribution of color. The other ingredients can be included as you pick and choose.
- Mozzarella Pearls
- Green Olives
- Kalamata Olives
- Cheese Cubes
- Marinated Artichoke Hearts
- Salami
- Pepperoni
- Prosciutto
- Cucumber Slices
- Mini Pickles
*Mix and match to suit your taste and budget.
Can I Do Any Prep Work in Advance?
Absolutely. You can prepare your skewers/picks in advance and place them all in a large freezer bag, and then refrigerate until it’s time to construct your wreath.
How to Construct an Antipasto/Charcuterie Holiday Wreath
- Prep your skewers/appetizer picks – place a cherry tomato at the base, followed by a mozzarella pearl. Add additional ingredients as desired until appetizer pick is filled to your liking. I needed about 25 appetizer picks filled with ingredients to achieve the fullness that I desired in my wreath.
- Begin by covering your round surface/board/plate with parchment paper, if desired. Trim the edges of the parchment paper to fit the size of your plate.
- Arrange the rosemary sprigs in a large circle around the perimeter of the board, as shown in the image below.
- Arrange the previously prepared appetizer/cocktail picks in a circle, repeating until all prepared picks have been used and only a small, empty wreath center remains. Adjust picks as needed until the wreath matches the desired aesthetic.
- Use the basil leaves to fill in any gaps and add additional fullness to the wreath.
- Serve, party, and drank.
That’s it. It’s super easy and very pleasing to look at. This wreath is sure to liven up any gatherings that may take place during your holiday season.
Try it out and let me know what you think!
Peace,
Adri
