Peace, family.
The autumnal equinox has not quite arrived just yet, but fall is definitely in the air. If you stand really still, on one leg, with your eyes closed then you’ll feel the slightest breeze here in Texas. Don’t get me wrong – it’s still hot. Like 89 degrees as we speak hot. But at least our 100 degrees (and up) days seem to be behind us and the wind gives us a little something to look forward to.
My favorite grocery store has pumpkins lining their entranceway, retailers have their finest sweaters and hoodies on display, the kiddos are back in school, and football has returned. One of my neighbors even has a jack-o-lantern in her yard already. She works fast! This year has been a strange one to say the least, so I don’t blame folks for finding joy wherever they can. For me, it’s this DIY pumpkin spice blend.
Although I’m absolutely one of “those people” who long for and romanticize autumn, I’ve never been a big pumpkin spice lover. I enjoy a few seasonal beverages and desserts on occasion, but that is usually the extent of my pumpkin spice experience. I have friends who are ALL over pumpkin spice everything from the beginning of September all the way through Christmas. No judgement at all. To me, pumpkin spice always tastes so different, depending on where you purchase the product from.
For more consistency, I thought it’d be great to whip up my own little seasoning blend to help usher in the spirit of autumn. I’ve been making a lot of my own seasonings lately. If you’re looking for more inspo, try out my homemade lemon pepper seasoning. This pumpkin spice blend is so quick and easier than you may think. All you need is a few spices that you probably already have in your arsenal. For this blend, I ground my own spices, but fret not. If you don’t have a coffee/spice grinder just grab the powdered versions of each.
What you Need to Make Pumpkin Spice Seasoning Blend | Pumpkin Pie Spice
- Ginger – A bit of ground/powdered ginger is all you need. I start by getting some fresh ginger root, thinly slicing it, and drying it in my oven on the lowest setting. It took a little over an hour and a half for my ginger to completely dry out. After that I simply grind it in my coffee & spice grinder to create a powder, and sift it to get out any larger pieces. You can then take those larger pieces and run them through the grinder again.
- Cinnamon – Freshly ground cinnamon is super easy to achieve. Simply break up some cinnamon sticks, toss them in your spice grinder, and go to town! Again, if you don’t have a grinder, the store-bought ground cinnamon works just as well here.
- Allspice – I use store-bought allspice.
- Nutmeg – I grind my own nutmeg, but again store-bought is fine.
- Cloves
- Kosher Salt– A lot of the pumpkin spices recipes I’ve come across do not call for salt, which baffles me. You don’t need much – just the tiniest bit really gives the rest of the flavors more life and makes them pop. You can omit the salt, but I truly recommend adding it.
How to Make Pumpkin Spice Seasoning Blend | Pumpkin Pie Spice
There aren’t much in the way of “instructions” here. Simply gather your ingredients, and use a whisk to combine until well blended. As with other spices, you’ll want to store this seasoning blend in an airtight container, in a dark, cool place away from moisture.
That’s it! Use this seasoning blend to your heart’s delight all season long! If you use it, tag me on Instagram so I can see and share your delicious creation.
As usual try it out and let me know what you think.
Peace,
Adri
