Blackened Catfish


Peace! Apparently I’ve been on a “blackened” kick lately. Remember the tenders? To be honest, I just had a lot of leftover seasoning and was excited to use it again. It’s that good! Don’t forget that if you’re pinched for time or ingredients, or simply don’t feel like blending those dang spices, there are plenty of store-bought blackened seasonings to choose from.

Catfish is the epitome of comfort food to me. I grew up attending family fish-fries, and have a healthy appreciation for catfish po’ boys. I know a lot of folks have strong feelings about catfish but it’s something that I truly enjoy, in extreme moderation. In this recipe, we forego the traditional frying in favor of a low-carb meal that doesn’t disappoint. With the lime juice and salsa, feel free to tweak the measurements to fit your macros. Blackened Catfish
Super easy, SUPER delicious!
  • 2 Catfish Filets
  • 1-2 tbsp. Olive Oil
  • 2 tsp. Sea Salt
  • 2 tsp. Smoked Paprika
  • 1 tsp. Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 tsp. Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1 tsp. Dried Celery
  • 2 tsp. Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp. Black Pepper
  • to taste Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice
  • 1 bunch Cilantro (Chopped)
  • 1/2 Cucumber (Diced)
  • 1 Jalapeno Pepper (Chopped)
  • 2 Roma Tomato (Diced)
In a small glass bowl, combine the tomato, cilantro, jalapeno, and cucumber until well combined. Add one squeeze of lime juice (optional) and set aside.To make the blackened seasoning, combine the sea salt, paprika, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, dried celery, garlic powder, and black pepper with a whisk until well mixed.Coat catfish filets in the seasoning mix on both sides, ensuring an even coat.Add the olive oil to a cast iron skillet, and allow to heat (medium high) for about 4 to 5 minutes.Cook the filets for 5 minutes per side. The fish is done when slightly flaky to the touch (with fork). Top with the cucumber salsa and add one squeeze of lime juice to finish (optional).
